Practice Statement

At Amalgam Modelmaking, we see models as an integral part of the design process. They are a means of exploring, testing and communicating ideas in three dimensions. A physical model can reveal qualities that are difficult to understand through drawings or digital imagery alone, allowing scale, proportion, materiality, light and spatial relationships to be considered and challenged. We work closely with architects, designers and other creative practitioners at different stages of a project, producing models ranging from early conceptual and study models through to detailed presentation, planning and fabrication models. The level of detail and finish is carefully considered according to the purpose of each model, whether it is being used to test an idea, communicate a design, support a planning submission or convey the finished proposal. Our approach combines traditional modelmaking skills with contemporary digital techniques. We work across a wide range of materials, including timber, card, paper, acrylic, resin, metal and specialist finishes, using processes such as CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, casting and hand fabrication. Digital models and drawings can be translated into physical form with precision, while handcraft allows us to respond intuitively to the character and requirements of each project. For us, modelmaking is not simply the reproduction of an architectural design. It is a process of interpretation and understanding. By making ideas tangible, models encourage discussion, expose opportunities and problems, and help designers, clients and collaborators understand a project from new perspectives. The physical model remains a powerful tool for thinking as well as communicating, turning an idea on screen or paper into something that can be examined, handled and experienced.

Modelmaking Space and Resources

Our modelmaking process begins with understanding the design intent and translating drawings, digital models and concepts into carefully considered physical objects. Our skilled makers combine traditional handcraft with digital fabrication and other specialist techniques, selecting materials and methods appropriate to each project. We work collaboratively with architects, designers and clients to develop accurate, detailed models at the required scale and finish, from presentation and study models through to complex bespoke architectural pieces.
