Our approach to modelmaking emphasizes the tactile and spatial value of translating two-dimensional ideas into three-dimensional forms. At its core, it is a tool for communicating complex architectural ideas through a minimalistic yet expressive model language, which can be described as artistic objects rather than accurate project displays, highlighting key design drivers and spatial compositions. Materials, colours and textures play a vital role in conveying these concepts, making our models a crucial and valuable part of the design process.
We believe physical models are the most accessible and intuitive means of representing space, atmosphere and architectural intent. Concept models encourage creativity by allowing for experimental decisions and messy iterations, fostering dynamic discussions and a fluid design process. Crafting models ourselves allows us to create a deeper understanding for the design, leading to more thought-through designs. Competition briefs determine the model scale, and the design process begins with the construction of a site model and the assigned insert plate and area before assessing the contextual requirements and design drivers. This foundation enables us to explore numerous design variations and make informed decisions.
Insert models placed within the site model allow us to continuously assess design proposals in relation to their urban context. Our design ethos holds that thoughtful solutions emerge from a rigorous, explorative process. By developing multiple different model studies, we ensure that each project is guided by a distinct design philosophy and architectural vision tailored to its unique context.
Our presentation and working models are built by architects and designers from the competition team, which is responsible for the design. The working models are used in design meetings to discuss the architectural composition and design intent.
Our professional modelmakers build presentation and submission models with occasional assistance from the design team. Furthermore, we create façade studies on a larger scale during the implementation phase of our projects.
If our capacity is reached, we outsource these models to professional modelmaking workshops, such as the Architekturmodellbau Kollektiv.
