Practice Statement

Model making is intrinsic to our design development. We make a model (in some form) for nearly all of our projects.

We find that model making and the craft of making things by hand compels us to slow down and to think and explore. Testing and rejecting ideas often pushes the design in an unexpected direction and innovative ideas emerge. For our practice, this tactile approach almost always produces something that would be unattainable from working with computer 3D modelling software.

Our models are also invaluable tools for our clients. Our focus is domestic projects and our clients are therefore people who own and will live in the places we design for them; a good model is invaluable in helping them to visualise and to appreciate how their new living spaces will work for them. For most people a good model is much easier to understand and relate to than even the most skilful 2D drawing.
