SHIP

Practice Statement

SHIP ARCHITECTS is an architecture studio established in Tokyo in 2015. Physical model making is central to our design process. From the earliest stages, we use models to explore and express ideas, even if the design is still rough. This hands-on approach reveals possibilities that drawings or discussions alone may miss, sparking creativity and unexpected solutions.

We continually test and refine our ideas through iterative modelling, often producing dozens—sometimes over a hundred—study models for a single project. This process allows us to evaluate and develop designs quickly and effectively.

Models are also powerful communication tools. They clearly convey spatial ideas to clients, including those unfamiliar with technical drawings or digital renderings. Physical models provide a direct sense of scale, proportion, and atmosphere.

In later stages, we build full-scale (1:1) mock-ups to test construction details like joints and handrails. These models help us ensure precision and feasibility before final execution.

We believe that when a model feels right, the built space will too. Physical models are not just representations, but essential tools in both design and communication throughout our practice.
