We see physical modelmaking as a fundamental part of our design development process. Models are used throughout - from early conceptual stages to detailed design refinement - and serve as tools for internal exploration, client engagement, and public consultation.
Despite advances in digital modelling, we believe physical models offer a unique, tactile experience that enhances architectural thinking in ways digital tools cannot replicate. We incorporate models into nearly every project and use different types of models at various stages of design.
Our on-site model shop allows close collaboration between model makers and project teams. Together, they explore materials, textures, and construction techniques to produce models that are both viable and visually compelling.
Models are pivotal in translating drawings into tangible objects, helping us test ideas, understand scale, and communicate spatial qualities. They foster deeper discussions with clients and communities, making complex proposals more accessible and inclusive. We also prioritise sustainability in modelmaking, using recycled materials and timber offcuts where possible.
Ultimately, our models are not static - they evolve with the design. We keep them all as a record of our process: each one a stepping stone toward the final building.
The practice is fortunate enough to have two professional model makers on-site. Our model makers work in collaboration with our project teams throughout the design process.
