Practice Statement

Model making at Stallan-Brand is embedded in our process. It is a practice we enjoy and believe that it helps us in our design progress. The reasons we make models is because it is slow, engaging and adds value to our client offer.

Working Slow _ Slowing our process by committing to making models at key stages in the development of a design allows us time to think.

Engaging _ We have made different types of models to capture or explore ideas, including the study of spatial relationships, scale and massing, proportion and proof of concept. The quality we are trying to present back to ourselves or a client can have greater clarity in model form because it is tactile, visually obvious and more often the centrepiece of a discussion.

Value _ In theory we could forget making physical models in lieu of digital versions as it’s faster, cheaper and less messy. Many commercial practices forgo investing in model craft for this reason, however we think this is shortsighted. The value we extract from model making is we hope rewarded in the quality and formal integrity of architecture.
