Studio Akkerhuis

Practice Statement

Modelmaking at Studio Akkerhuis plays a crucial role in the design and presentation process to communicate ideas, develop the design, assuring a collaborative process between architects, clients, consultants and model-makers.

On a design level, physical models help architects convey their design concepts visually and spatially: they allow architects to experiment with forms, explore proportions and spatial relationships in a hands-on way, often leading to design improvements and problems identification.

On a communication level, they allow our clients, collaborators, and other stakeholders to better understand the design intentions and the relationship between spaces.

We consider them as a physical manifestation of design concepts. We love them also because they preserve the handcraft tradition in architecture, which is important not to lose in an increasingly digital world.

The relationship between architects and modelmakers is also very enriching. If the architects provide the initial design concepts, the skilled modelmaker contributes to the physical realization of the ideas, ensuring accuracy and precision.

Modelmaking Space and Resources

Architects work with in-house professional modelmakers to make models.

Architects make models (cardboard, foam, balsa) for feasibility studies (project volumetry, environment, mass studies, etc) and Architects work with in-house professional modelmaker to make models providing the base drawings for the model and sometimes assisting the model maker in some part of the modelization. It is always team work, the modelmaker is part of the project team.
