Studio Laith

Practice Statement

Studio Laith is an architecture, design and modelmaking practice based in North Yorkshire.

The handmade paper models we build are fundamental to our architectural design process. They’re tangible, accessible and invaluable for communicating ideas with clarity, allowing a holistic view of a design to be gained without requirement for any prior or professional knowledge.

Our models are crafted using only paper, glue and delicate scalpel work. Each element is constructed from flat paper ‘nets’ which are scored, folded and assembled to carefully build up colour, texture and detail. We’re fortunate to have a dedicated modelmaking area in our studio with plenty of natural light and space to make, review and store our creations, and often find it to be welcome escape from our screens and the demands of modern practice. Time here never fails to ignite our enthusiasm and feed our creativity, and it’s usually where we find our most successful design ideas.

In addition to our architecture services, we also take on bespoke model commissions. We’ve worked on everything from 3D maps and site models, to house portraits and interior studies, and love discussing the details with clients and bringing their ideas to life.

Modelmaking Space and Resources

We build concept and development models to inform our architectural designs and to communicate our ideas to clients. We also take on bespoke model commissions, which are usually highly detailed presentation models.
