UNStudio

Practice Statement

Modelmaking has always been an essential part of UNStudio. Even before the digitalisation of design.

The primary purpose of the model space and the model team is to support the design process – this is done through collaboration, knowledge sharing and with technical & creative input. Of course we make models on request, but we encourage people to also make (study) models themselves. We collaborate with the teams closely so that we can get the (type) files we need to smoothen our process. And communicate frequently about technique, materials and progress.

Our range of models is quite diverse. From doorhandles to masterplans. From sketch/study to competition/presentation models. The latter type is often an “easy, fast and quality” approach. Utilizing all knowledge, technology and techniques we have inhouse, we strive for efficient and effect results. As a team we must rely and trust each other to work responsibly and to maintain a high professional standard. At the same time we strive for a healthy, climate conscience and safe working environment.

The requests from design teams are often very short term. A few days, a week, rarely a month in advance. We are more interested in experiment and research than a definitive final product. Good planning and coordination is something we strive and try to be ahead of the curve. Also managing the expectations of the design team is an important factor here.

Our models are used for different purposes such as internal use, client requests, competition requirements or as a tool to communicate.

We stay focussed on using sustainable materials and try and produce less waste or re-use/purpose as much as possible. We always try to communicate this ahead of a project. We use Global Sharing Sessions, Workshops and our Intranet to communicate this message.

Modelmaking Space and Resources

Architects ask in-house professional modelmakers to make models for them.

We organize workshops for designers/architects. Sometimes our architects come in and make quick sketch models, we love itwhen that happens.

We occasionally outsource from Amsterdam (Studio KU+, Made by Mistake, Maankraters)

Dubai office outsources to Livescale, Miyamar and Inoventive3D.
